Our House With An Unwanted New Look

Okay, I don't know what it is about this. In all the years of Kris' being a youth pastor, we never once got our house rolled. We haven't even lived here for 2 yrs., and we've had it done two times! Last year after graduation night, our house, the principal's house, and someone else's got it. We laughed until we found out that 80 rolls of toilet paper had been stolen from the school/church. That's just ridiculous! Hopefully that is not what happened this time. We never found out who did that. We woke up this morning though to quite an awful site. The front yard is one thing, but we keep our gate in the back locked 'cause of the pool, and whoever got us this time, climbed our gate and got the backyard. Kris and the girls spent the morning cleaning up the at least 86 rolls of toilet paper used last night (just what he needs as he has enough to deal with while I am down) and is a bit worried about the pool and the filter (thankfully turned off) now. I am reminding myself of all we say about God's sovereignty, because I have not been a happy camper this morning because of how this adds to Kris' pressures! Of course, my wonderful husband says, if that's why I am upset, than I should just relax, because he's not (not too badly anyway). :-)

Introducing Butterscotch

Well, I figured if I gave Daisy, Sarah's dog, a spot on our blog, then I certainly should give honor to our own pet. :-) We became pet owners for the first time last year (well, we did have fish in S.C.). After Emma's regularly asking for some sort of pet, and much discussion on our part, we decided a guinea pig would be good. She had been around the classroom guinea pig at school and really liked it. I did not seem to have any allergy problems when I was playing with it, so we agreed on getting one of our own. Butterscotch is coming up on 1 yr. old and is a fun little guy to have around.

Butterscotch likes to run around in our foyer area. We keep our bedroom doors closed. It's not fun trying to get him out from under the bed or dresser.

The girls loving on Butterscotch

Butterscotch LOVES his hay. He eats pellets and yogurt drops during the day and chews on bark bites. His most favorite thing in all the world is getting carrots in the morning. He squeaks for them as soon as we are awake.

Butterscotch plays in and with his chew tunnel.

That's all folks!

Never Would Have Guessed, Would You?

Check this out: http://www.honda.co.uk/civic/

My chorale director in Midland sent this link to us this past year. I thought this would be a fun post for our blog. It is amazing to me what is making every sound in this commercial. Click "Watch Civic" when you get past the intro., and it will take you to the commercial. For those of you more curious, continue by watching how they made the whole thing. It is fascinating!

Fun With Money!

You want something fun to do? Emma and I just ran across this site that shows how to make a shirt with a dollar bill. We tried it out, and here are the results. For your own directions, including photos for each step, visit:

Queen Daisy

I don't know. Sarah may have gone too far on this one. Ha ha Check out the web site for her DOG!!!! She really is a fun little dog, definitely full of energy. I just didn't know you could basically do My Space type pages for your pets. Maybe I will get our guinea pig, Butterscotch, his own. . . .

Jonas Charles Barker

Yeah!!!!! I have a nephew! Little Jonas took everyone by surprise and came 5 weeks early. We are so glad that he is healthy and growing well now. God gave me an unexpected opportunity to go to Greenville to meet the little guy and help my sister for a week. I was able to drive down with a couple of college students from our church who already had a trip planned to leave the night Jonas was born. They heard about his coming early and my wishing I could be there and offered to take me. I knew nothing of their plans to be going to Greenville! Kris had extra time off that week due to the holiday and stayed with the girls. The neatest thing was that I didn't tell Sarah I was coming. We left late on July 3, drove through the night, and I showed up at the hospital after lunch on July 4. It was truly emotional!

What an awesome head of hair, huh?

Silliest Picture Award--Part 2

Well, I've discovered you can have only so many pics in a post, so I divided the silly pictures into two posts. I am learning. . . .

Emma after losing her first top middle tooth--Excited?!?

Emma after losing both top middle teeth--Yikes!

Olivia wrapped like a mummy after a bath

Olivia ready for her birthday party!

And there they are. . . .

And the Silliest Picture Award Goes to. . . .

Just wanted to show some of the silly sides of our girls that they have exhibited so far this year. They definitely keep us smiling and laughing!

The girls enjoying Christmas cupcakes (in January :-) ) at Great-Grandma Hottle's house

Having fun playing dress up at my cousins house in January

Olivia fell and couldn't get up out of the snow.

All I said was, "Show Mommy some silly faces." We got the "NO WAY!" pic and the Godfather.

Girls with spirit! Faces were painted for the Homecoming game at our school.

During our AZ trip to visit Kris' Grandma, we went to his cousins house. I tried to get a nice "4 generations" picture. Thanks Emma for your help!

Family Happenings

Many of you may be wondering how old the girls are now and what's been going on with us this year. Well, Emma is now 6 1/2 yrs. old, and Olivia turned 3 yrs. old in May. Unbelievably, Emma will be going into 1st grade this fall, and we may do 2 half days of K-3 for Olivia. We are not sure what my teaching schedule will be yet, so we'll see. I have no great desire to send Olivia to school, even preschool, yet.

This was a big year for us with Emma going to school every day for the first time. We did only do the 1/2 day Kindergarten. She did very well, and has a desire for learning that I hope doesn't stop! We just got her K-5 SAT scores in the mail last week, and we were so proud of her. Her overall grade equivelant was into 2nd grade with her scores! The lowest ones were in the late part of 1st grade, and the highest was in the late part of 3rd grade. I am not saying she should be in a gifted program, but it's exciting to see her do well. :-) Hopefully it will continue. My mom says that I was ahead in Kindergarten and on course for the gifted program, but look what happened to me. Ha ha It will be hard at first to have Emma gone all day this year. I think Olivia will be in mourning. She loves having Emma around, and they play well together. Last year school hours for us were 8:30--11:30 in the morning. This year it will be 8:15 AM to 3:20 PM.

Miss Olivia is coming along well in many areas. She doesn't have many problems anymore in the lower digestive area--praise the Lord! We still have to give her something in juice, every other day now, to keep things working well in her little body. She is talking so much better now. We understand pretty much everything she is telling us. Some other people still look at us or Emma for interpretation, but not often any more. :-) She wasn't nearly like our Emma, who was saying full sentences and carrying on intelligent conversations by the time she was two. Most people, us included, were in shock over that. Olivia loves to dress up, paint, color, play on the new swingset and ride her tricycle (which she just recently got figured out well). Those are her things. She could take or leave TV (no complaints here), and she has not been into books as much as I would like. She has surprised us this week with being able to do some games on the computer. It is upstairs right now and has been appealing to her.

That leads me into what has recently gone on with me. The computer is upstairs 'cause I am not allowed to do stairs right now. I had surgery almost 2 weeks ago. I had a rectocele repair, not fun but necessary, a tubal (very difficult emotionally for me to come to, but after praying and thinking about another pregancy involving bedrest, I agreed it was best), D and C, and had endometriosis removed. I have a 4 to 6 week recovery. I am glad to be at 2 weeks tomorrow! The surgery went well, but I have developed an infection and am on a couple new meds for that. Thankfully it was caught only 6 days after surgery.

Kris is busy being dad, mom, pastor, etc. right now, so pray for him. We have lots of people helping us with meals and babysitting the girls here and sometimes taking them for a day. What a blessing it has been to have the help! Kris is finally tackling his summer goals list he said and is planning already for this upcoming school year. He even asked me last night what my opinion was on music for the choir/drama tour they take in the fall. We feel like we are finally getting the hang of things here in the new ministry and place that we live. It is hard to believe that it will be two years in the middle of Sept. since we moved to Midland. Kris is so excited for the opportunities to be teaching and preaching again. That has come in the last several months with Sunday School opportunities and helping with parenting classes on Wed. nights this last year. He loves to study God's Word and teach it! It has been weird for me to see him just as a music pastor in our new church after his being an asst. pastor in youth, music, and doing other things at Grace for so long. Don't get me wrong, being "just a music pastor" is not second rate or so easy or anything. We have a huge ministry here that demands much time and effort to be what it should be. I just have missed seeing the pastoral/teaching side of him until recently. He is really in his element, as it were, in that role.

Well, that is the general update on us. I feel like I just did a Christmas letter. Ha ha So many of you haven't known much about what is going on with us though, so I was hoping to hit on questions you might have had.

Recent Pics

Here are some recent pics of our girls.

Sermon Quotes

My husband preached a message last night at church concerning loving God. Here are a few of quotes that he used in his sermon that I thought were both powerful and convicting:

My indwelling sin stands in the way of my full satisfaction in God. It opposes and perverts my pursuit of God. It opposes by making other things look more desirable than God. And it perverts by making me think I am pursuing joy in God when, in fact, I am in love with his gifts. - John Piper, When I Don't Desire God, p. 14

A perfect man would never act from sense of duty; he’d always want the right thing more than the wrong one. Duty is only a substitute for love (of God and of other people), like a crutch, which is a substitute for a leg. Most of us need the crutch at times; but of course it’s idiotic to use the crutch when our own legs (our own loves, tastes, habits, etc.) can do the journey on their own! - C.S. Lewis: Letters to Children, p. 276

O God, I have tasted Thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more. I am painfully conscious of my need of further grace. I am ashamed of my lack of desire. O God, the Triune God, I want to want Thee; I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made more thirsty still. Show me Thy glory, I pray Thee, that so I may know Thee indeed. Begin in mercy a new work of love within me. Say to my soul, `Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.' Then give me grace to rise and follow Thee up from this misty lowland where I have wandered so long. In Jesus' name, Amen. - A.W. Tozer, The Pursuit of God
